This quarter’s “Community Ask” is on FRESH FRUITS and VEGETABLES for our food pantry as the summer months are upon Colorado! With many school programs traditionally ending with the summer months, ACCESS Housing knows our local “food desert” is a challenge for families with growing children. As part of our food pantry summer efforts, our ASK is towards fresh ingredients for making a nutritious family meal. As we are all seeing the rise in food prices, with a possible $75 donation, this amount can cover fresh ingredients for FOUR of our unit families during a week in July or in August. Items to be purchased include but are not limited to: salad mixes, fresh apples, oranges and bananas, and hearty vegetables in season from local farmer stands, etc.

Starting in September, ACCESS Housing will be expanding its Food Pantry Program for monthly distribution on the third Sunday of every month to the larger community. Based on a pre-set box, team members and volunteers will be in our parking lot from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm for pick-ups based on a first come, first serve distribution.

Food Bank Needs:

  • Cash Donations to support purchasing fresh fruits & seasonal vegetables
  • After School Snacks: portable fruits (i.e. apples, bananas, oranges, carrots, celery, etc.), fixings for a classic peanut butter & jelly sandwich, pretzels
  • Holiday related:
Thanksgiving — turkeys, potatoes, green beans, cranberries, fresh dinner rolls
Halloween — pumpkins, all the ingredients to make pumpkin pie
Spring time — ham, potatoes, salad mixes
Winter Holiday — any meal items related to a traditional family dinner — share your family traditions by providing a complete meal for a family of four. (Menu of your traditional choosing.)

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 46% of families were earning less than $21,600. This number has increased to 57% during the COVID-19 pandemic. Source: Adams County Community Needs Assessment 2020
